With the monthly Village Voices series, we aim to take the pulse of the Orcas Island community. Every month we’ll be out and about, asking people to share their point of view on a particular topic. Sometimes the questions will be serious, sometimes more light-hearted. We invite you to join the conversation by sharing your response in the comments area.

And now it’s August. So far our Orcas Island weather has been relatively mild. While there have been plenty of days of pure blue sky, there seem to have been at least as many days that have been cool and cloudy. Meanwhile, the daylight hours are beginning to get noticeably shorter and before too long we’ll have a taste of Fall in the air.

What have you read or watched recently that was either interesting, engaging, worthwhile, fun, or just helped pass the time?

(comments have been lightly edited for clarity)

Lovella: A movie I saw recently that I liked was “Knives Out.” It had good twists and turns. It was just good and I don’t find a lot of stuff that I actually like. I also have been re-reading “All Creatures Great and Small” by James Harriot. I used to watch the BBC show, but the book is just so fantastic.

Katie: “Kindred” by Octavia Butler. I liked it because it went into the complexities of race and the relations between Black and white people in a way that was interesting.

Deborah: I have an ongoing education program that I’m involved in for my career as a licensed massage therapist and have just finished a course on energy medicine that was really fascinating.

Alina: I’ve been watching a show called “Bull.” It’s a legal show about a trial scientist. I like watching lawyer shows and things like that. I’ve also been reading an historical fiction series set in London during the plague in 1666, so it’s kind of relevant to now. The first book is “At the Sign of the Sugar Plum,” and now I’m reading the second one (“Petals in the Ashes,” both by Mary Cooper).
