Wednesday, October 8, 5:30-7 p.m. on Orcas Island: Heartwood House
— from Leadership San Juan Islands —
The chance for San Juan County residents to learn more about their community and themselves returns, as Leadership San Juan Islands (LSJI) prepares for its eleventh year.
Applications for the county-wide program are now being accepted and will be available at island libraries and open houses.
LSJI not only fosters leadership skills such as facilitation and collaborative problem solving but gives islanders the opportunity to better understand local systems (and how they interconnect) related to governance, economics, social services, history and culture, education, and the environment. Participants learn in a cohort setting through a series of challenge days and retreats.
The five-month course begins in January and finishes in May; space is limited to 20 students. LSJI alumni and the public are invited to attend these open houses to learn more about the program:
Wednesday, October 1, 5:30-7 p.m. on Lopez Island: Lopez Island Library, 2225 Fisherman Bay Road;
Wednesday, October 8, 5:30-7 p.m. on Orcas Island: Heartwood House, 70 Langell Lane, Eastsound
Wednesday, October 15, 5:30-7 p.m. on San Juan Island: Hushebeck Residence, 285 Geneste St, Friday Harbor.
Multiple businesses and agencies across the county play an essential part in the success of the program. Individuals and organizations willing to offer fiscal support are encouraged to come and ask questions about the significance of the program for our county. Sponsorships can be provided to students in full, or in part, by an employer, a local nonprofit, or other community member.
The members of the 2015 executive council are Terry Whalen, Steve Hushebeck, Jan Bollwinkel-Smith, Khorsian Blanc Ridings, Gay Graham, Lori Williams, Laurie Orton and Lee Taylor. Program co-directors are Tara Dalton and Morgan Meadows.
Deadline for submissions is no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, October 31. For more information contact Tara Dalton at 468-3875 or Morgan Meadows at 376-9213.
