"Birth of the Baby Buddha Birds" - a creation from the hollow egg form by Maria Papademetriou

By Madie Murray

A sneak preview of some of the beautiful and original egg-art our Island artists have created for the annual Orcas Island Education Foundation Food for Thought Benefit auction will take place at the following businesses having them on display between May 10 and May 18:  Darvill’s, Bucking Doe, Kathleen Taylor Chocolates, Orcas Library, Port of Orcas/Airport, Cherry T’s, Pawki’s, Jillery, Country Corner Wine Cellars, Orcas Arts & Gift Shop, Salon Mir’ Toi, and the Chamber of Commerce Office.   You will also be able to view several of them online at www.oief.org/egg_gallery.html.

This year, however, there’s going to be something a little different:  an “egg hunt.”   You may pick up a complete listing of businesses “hosting” eggs at the Chamber of Commerce.  The list will include the businesses and the title/artist of each egg, but it won’t tell you which egg is where.  It’s up to you to find them.  The first person finding all of the eggs in their correct location and returns the sheet to the Chamber Office will win two tickets to the Benefit!

The always unique and egg-citing Food for Thought Benefit for our public schools will take place on May 19 at the Discovery House at Rosario starting at 6:30 with a “moveable feast” featuring food items from Ship Bay, Christina, Cafe Olga along with the Student Chef Competition winners Ray Doss, Keenan O’Brien, Sayde Larson, Millie Kau and Arla Sutton with their award-winning recipes.  Silent and live auction items will go home with the lucky winners and all proceeds go toward our public school programs.  Tickets for the Benefit are on sale at Darvill’s, the Chamber and the Elementary School Office for $65 per person.   Free childcare will be provided at the event by calling 376-4376.
