OIGC Member’s Book Club Sunday, June 8, 5 p.m. at the Orcas Public Library
||| FROM ORCAS ISLAND GARDEN CLUB |||
Calling all garden lovers and book enthusiasts! We are excited to announce the launch of the Orcas Island Garden Club’s very own Book Club — a space where we’ll explore captivating books that inspire, nurture, and connect us to plants, nature and each other.
Whether you’re an avid reader, a gardening novice, or just love to discuss nature and gardens with your fellow OIGC members, these evening events will be a great opportunity for engaging conversation and community.Let’s all grow together — one book at a time!
Robin Lee Carlson is a natural science illustrator and the author of The Cold Canyon Fire Journals. She builds careful observations of the natural world into deeper commentary on ecology and climate change, and her work centers on field sketching ecoreportage, living documentation of the ever-accelerating transformation of ecosystems by human activity. Her work has also appeared in The Common and Arnoldia. She teaches online and in-person workshops that combine drawing, painting, and natural history. Robin is one of the recipients of the Fireline Fellowship, part of the Long-Term Ecological Reflections Program in the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest in Oregon.
In addition, to complement the book discussion, sign up for the Nature Sketching event with Robin the following day to enrich your learning!Materials are provided, just bring your creativity!
Going forward, the OIGC Book Club will be a members-only event. We will hold meetings every other month from September through May at Darvill’s bookstore and we encourage all members to join in. We’ve already received some great book suggestions and we look forward to hearing from all of you!September’s selection will be Rooted, Life at the Crossroads of Science, Nature & Spirit, by Lyanda Lynn Haupt. Date, time and sign-up details to come in mid-June.
Our first event will be held in partnership with Darvill’s Bookstore on Sunday, June 8 at 5 pm at the Orcas Library. Our book club journey will be kicked off with The Light Eaters by Zoë Schlanger, a beautifully written exploration of plant intelligence that will challenge us all to think differently about the world around us. Robin Lee Carlson, author and natural science illustrator, will be leading the discussion. All are welcome and Darvill’s will be onsite for those who wish to purchase the book. No registration required.
