Indian Island Marine Health Observatory Field Research Days, May 15-17. Join local scientists and community volunteers at Eastsound Waterfront Park at 12 noon as they conduct surveys of fish and intertidal animals on low tide days.  Wear appropriate footwear for walking to the island (wet sand, gravel, shallow water), and come on down to the beach! Teacher’s Open House on Canoe Island. Take part in a variety of programs in island ecology, marine biology, yoga, sea kayaking, cooking, and custom group programs, which do not have to include French as the central component. A great opportunity for teachers, youth group leaders, and other interested adults to learn about the youth, school, and family education programs that occur on Canoe Island. Cost: Free for the afternoon (or $15 overnight: includes meals, lodging, transportation from Orcas, Shaw, Lopez and San Juan islands to Canoe Island). The Island Sinfonia Spring Concert at 2 p.m. at Orcas Center, featuring English Folk Song Suite, Norfolk Rhapsody and The London Symphony (second movement) by Ralph Vaughan Williams, two movements from Beethoven’s Third Symphony, and a jazz selection for winds by Alex Wilder.  This is the Sinfonia’s 20th year since Mother Kateri Visocky assembled a small group of string players on Shaw Island.  A wine and  cheese reception will follow.

Climate Monologues Premieres on Orcas Island.  7 p.m. at the Grange. Local artist-educator Sharon Abreu will preview her new musical one-woman show about climate change.
