The topic of the benefits of exercise for those who are in or recovering from cancer treatment was presented by Scott Heisinger D.P.T. of Orcas Island Physical Therapy to the Cancer Support Group on February 9.
Many people, when hit by catastrophic or life-threatening illness, want to close down and simply follow an old adage to rest and reduce their physical activity. Why? To reduce pain, avoid rapid heart rate or shortness of breath. Current research is showing that exercise is safe and possible during cancer treatment by improving the physical function and quality of the individual’s life. Why? Too much rest may lead to loss of function, muscle weakness, and reduced range of motion in the person with a chronic illness. Exercise helps older adults become stronger and better able to move about without falling. It also reduces depression and anxiety, improving psychological well-being. Scott Heisinger spoke about this topic in depth and many found the information very helpful.
This is only one of a range of topics discussed at the Cancer Support Group in order to provide as much helpful information as possible to those that need it. The group schedules a guest speaker several times a year to provide new information as it becomes available. During the past year guest speakers included Dr. David Russell who spoke on the benefits of Vitamin D therapy, and Dr. Kate Jewell N.D. “Nutrition and Lifestyle Coach” on nutrition.
The group meets on the second Thursday of each month in the Fireside Room of Orcas Island Community Church at 5 p.m. This is a monthly, no cost, confidential support group for anyone touched by cancer whether personally, as family member, friend, caregiver or in any other capacity. Finding out how others manage the special problems that cancer brings might help you find ways to cope with the problems that come along for you. Sharing with each other also includes new information for some. Sharing also provides comfort in knowing that we are all on the same journey, each at a different stage.
The next meeting of the Cancer Support Group will be held on Thursday, March 8. Call Bogdan or Carol at 376-4198 for more information.
