What happened in Farm to Classroom (K-5) during the month of October? We celebrated the process, practice and importance of seed saving.

We harvested enough seeds to both save for spring and make multiple donations to the Public Library’s very special Seed Library. Katie taught us how the Seed Library works…take the seeds you want to see grow in your garden and bring back double the amount!

She also read us a story in which the most abundant of gardens are those grown and shared by many hands, just like our school garden!

We looked through the heap of seed packets graciously donated by the Lancasters of Ace Hardware, informing one another of when to plant the seed, the necessary spacing between plantings, how deep into the soil the seed should rest, and how many days until germination.

In preparation for winter, we gathered up our pumpkins and delicata squash and put many of the garden beds to sleep.

During our final week in class we fired up the cob oven to celebrate the last pizza party of the season with James Ferraris of Soul Flour Bakery!

What happened in the Cafeteria?

We started the month off by celebrating “Taste Washington Day” with Shepherd’s Pie and an abundance of Orcas-grown produce in the salad bar.

Throughout the month we enjoyed butternut squash and chicken curry on couscous, smoked salmon pasta with broccoli, pork carnitas, chicken noodle soup with homemade rolls, chicken wraps with lentil veggie soup, and beef stroganoff over rice!

Thank you to Debbie, Zach and Bing for incorporating local produce into our school lunches. Your dedication to cooking up quality meals for our students and staff is much appreciated. Thank you to all our Orcas farmers who provide our school with organic produce.
