| Eastsound Main Break – Repair Resolved
UPDATE: The leak has been repaired and everyone is back in service. As of roughly 6:30 PM this evening – all water service was restored to the approximately 28 parcels on Main Street that were affected by today’s main break. The break was located in about 6 feet of water pipe right under the drive entering the frontage park coming off Main Street in front of the Landmark. There were larger-sized rocks on top of this section of main that were likely pushed down onto this main due to heavy vehicle traffic that eventually cracked the pipe over time. Of course we will never know the reason for this main break, but what I can tell you is that the repair is solid and we shouldn’t see this kind of thing happen down there again. Working with the capable Island Excavation crew, Eastsound Water staff Dan David, Brad Siep and Mark Seiler took excellent care of the leak repair under Operations Manager, Ryan Wynn. Office crew members Anna Van Gelder and Sarah Wixom spoke to hundreds of people bridging the gap between operations and our customers. All-in-all is was a good day of teamwork in service to our members and customers, just as you would expect. Eastsound Main Break – Repair Underway UPDATE: The affected main has now been exposed and is being prepared for repair. There was a lateral crack on a 6″ PVC, schedule 40 water line in a very utility-congested area by the roadway that was damaged. Next up, Island Excavating is preparing the area for a pipe replacement. This will be our next step in restoring water service to the effected area. To be clear, my last email was to the entire membership as an FYI and to explain any pressure loss or colorization in water in the general service area. Those issues should be resolved now as we focus on the area where the leak occurred. Here is the area currently effected downtown only:
Please note, any parcel outside of this area should not see any service disruption. For the parcels within this area, we will be sending specific instructions on water safety to be mindful of when we start restoring your water service later this evening. If you are still seeing colorization in your water, this will settle overnight. |
Today around 10:00 am, there was a Eastsound Water main break across from the Landmark Hotel (on Main St) on the south side of the roadway. Eastsound water operators were quickly on the scene and as of around 12:00 pm (noon), the leak was under control. A repair is now underway.
This was a large-scale leak and there were symptoms felt throughout the system. Specifically, non-leak effected users would have seen low water pressure and some colorization of iron and manganese which would make their water appear ‘muddy’ or ‘clouded.’ This would include all of the Eastsound core and surrounding areas from Raccoon Point to Judd Cove. These are natural byproducts of a leak this size.
Currently, several properties and businesses on Main Street are out of water until a repair is in place and water has been restored. The current estimate for this outage is 8:00 pm, possibly longer. We will not have clarity on a firm restoration time until much later today.

Hey Dan Burke and EWUA. This Main Street break sounds like what we experienced last month. Someone cut the water line up from our road with a backhoe. It was Saturday night in the middle of President’s Day weekend. The EWUA crew got on it and, we found out later, one of the crew made an all-night solo drive to Gig Harbor to obtain critical parts for the fix. Our water was flowing the next day. Water service sounds simple, but it isn’t. Thanks.
