With only a couple of weeks before our moving deadline, the search goes on for housing on the island where I have been living since before the turn of the last century — 1991.

With the passing of our landlord, we have been scrounging for a new place to live for two-plus months. I had no idea that housing was this scare – not just scarce, but expensive; take a look at these online rental ads. Did something happen while I was comfortably ensconced in my favorite place in the world? $28,000? $32,000? for a month’s rent?

Sure, I’ve read the comments on theOrcasonian about rental prices. I just didn’t know how severe it is.

As it becomes necessary to expand our search, the reality is frightening as we look beyond our Orcas shores to the mainland. The pressing question has become: is it authentic to continue publishing theOrcasonian from somewhere else? Technically, as well technologically, of course it will work. I can publish theOrcasonian from any beach in the world that has an internet connection. The internet will let us do anything from anywhere. But, I just cannot imagine being that detached from the Orcas reality. It is our home! Not to mention that it is the main income source, thanks to our subscribers.

So, last call, I guess. There are two of us in search of  a year-round 2+ bedroom home with limited stairs (because I seem to be getting old). We really don’t want to leave, yet it looks like that is in the offing.
