Arla Sutton serves her brother Sam and dad Chris at the Fur n Feathers Senior Dinner on Aug. 10

On Wednesday evening, some 30  Orcas kids, members of the County 4-H Fur ‘n Feathers club, served their annual dinner at the Orcas Senior Center.

Club members served the meal, cooked by Fur ‘n Feathers leader Kathy Morris,  to a full dining room. ( As in past years, the event sold out and late-comers had to be  turned away).  Many of the guests belonged to the 4-H club years ago — it has been a part of island life for over 75 years —  and remember the fun they had when they were youngsters.

Now, under Morris’ leadership, the group does baking and educational poster art projects, as well as small animal husbandry. Their projects will be on display at the County Fair, Aug. 17-20 in Friday Harbor. Each day, 4-H club members will act as docents in the poultry and rabbit barn, helping people hold animals in the petting area.

Fur ‘n Feathers has members from Kindergarten through 12th Grade. This year, 18-year-old  Julia Bailey attended the 4-H statewide “Know Your Government” conference held in Olympia during the legislative session.

Orcas Island 4-H also has an Equestrian Club, led by Lorena Stankevich. They will also be taking part in the County Fair.

Morris encourages everyone to support and attend the fair. “It helps 4-H; that’s when we exhibit our projects. The more poeple that come to the fair, the better it is for everybody.

“It also give the kids an opportunity to meet and find friendship with kids from the other islands.”
