Wednesday, 29 February at 7 p.m. at the Orcas Senior Center
Join sailor, photographer and storyteller Peter Fromm for a celebration — through slides and stories — of Wooden Boats—Spirits on the Water and the people who love them. Peter is a third-generation photographer who has been taking pictures for more than 50 years. Peter currently bases his 30’ yawl Uwila and 43’ floating photo gallery in Deer Harbor. He has given hundreds of presentations throughout the Pacific Northwest (and beyond) focusing on the boats, wildlife, and people Peter has encountered during his travels.
The event is a fundraiser for the Wooden Boat Society of the San Juan Islands, a non-profit dedicated to the continuation of maritime traditions in the San Juans. Everyone is welcome — donations for the Wooden Boat Society will be gratefully accepted.
About Peter
Peter Fromm, who is a third-generation photographer, began taking pictures in 1961.
He majored in Photography in the College of Fine Art at Ohio University, and earned a Master’s degree in Audio-Visual Communication, Environmental Education and Outdoor Recreation at the University of Oregon.
Peter has completed a wide variety of professional photography, film and video assignments and also teaches photo classes. He collected personal accounts of interactions with whales and dolphins from around the world and published two volumes of Whale Tales.
Peter lives aboard a wooden sailboat, and has been living and sailing in the San Juans since 1975. He holds a 100 ton U. S. Coast Guard Master license. Peter uses 35mm and 120 film cameras for his work.
Peter designed and built a 43’ wooden catamaran that serves as his floating photo gallery, which is currently moored in Deer Harbor. Peter’s gallery was inspired by historic photos he saw of another “gallery”, one built in Seattle in 1878 and used by at least three photographers over the years.
