In the past weeks many of us have shared fond remembrances of Abby Rueb, and we have marveled at the contributions she made to the community of Orcas Island over her long life here.
A favorite story is the Easter party the Ruebs hosted at their farm in Grindstone Harbor and the profusion of daffodils that come up in their yard every spring. According to Abby’s husband Rollie, the family went out the day after Thanksgiving each fall and the kids tossed daffodil bulbs up in the air, and where they landed was where Rollie augered the holes. The kids came along behind and to drop in the bulb and fill in the hole.
So, this Saturday, December 4, from 10 am to 3 pm, members of Orcas Island Children’s House staff and board of directors invites everyone to stop by the farmhouse on North Beach Road and celebrate Abby by planting a few daffodil bulbs in the Rueb tradition. We’ll be there with bulbs and augers ready to make the holes for you.
Coffee and cookies will be served, and masks are advised.
Let’s celebrate Abby and look forward to a beautiful spring.
