The Orcas Crossroads spring lecture series concludes on Sunday, May 23, 2:00 pm at the Orcas Center with Curtis Ebbesmeyer’s presentation The Undiscovered Ocean: The Sea Surface Hidden in Plain View.

Today the world is becoming more alert to the health of our oceans.  Whether it be oil spill, thousands of rubber duckies or athletic shoes dumped into the sea, what is the role of the oceans’ currents in the trash they transport?  What can the history of traveling ocean trash tell us, and what can be expected in the future?  Are there threats, or opportunities?  How should governments, communities and individuals respond to those threats and opportunities?  Dr. Ebbesmeyer will address these questions and discuss his groundbreaking studies of ocean currents.

Curtis Ebbesmeyer is an oceanographer and author of Flotsametrics and the Floating World:  How One Man’s Obsession with Runaway Sneakers and Rubber Ducks Revolutionized Ocean Science. Ebbesmeyer received his Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Washington, and throughout his career has studied flotsam spilled from cargo ships to help measure ocean health.  In 1996 he founded the non-profit Beachcombers’ and Oceanographers’ International Association for which he writes and publishes the Beachcombers’ Alert.

The Orcas Crossroads Lecture Series presents thoughtful, provocative speakers who help the Orcas community think about timely global and local issues.  Now concluding its third year, the series is co-sponsored by Friends of the Library, The Orcas Island Public Library, Orcas Center, the Daniel and Margaret Carper Foundation and the Crossroads Associates Circle.
