Orcas Island Lions Club continue its mission for health and vision year-round
By Jim Biddick
April 23 is our annual Easter Egg Hunt. The hunt will take place at Moran State Park at the picnic shelter. It will start at 10 a.m. and the way the kids go it will be done by 10:15 am. Get there early so that your young ones are not disappointed.
On May 9 and 10 the Club will host the Lions Health Screening Van. The unit screens for diabetes, vision, glaucoma, blood pressure and hearing. The van will be parked in front of Island Market both days and will be open from 10am till 6 pm.
Later in the month we will be in front of Island Market for our annual White Canes Campaign. Donations are greatly appreciate for the Northwest Lions Foundation for Sight and Hearing. Last year through the Foundation the Club was able to provide three cataract surgeries and this year we all ready have one scheduled.
As a side note, May is also Recycle for Sight Month. How many people know that there is a box in the Post Office Building just across from the bulletin board? This box has a Lions Club Logo on it and is where you can drop off any of your old glasses. The Orcas Lions collects the glasses and sunglasses, and sends them to the regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center where they are reconditioned and sent to developing countries.
While the program was officially adopted by the Lions in 1994 it has been running for over 80 years. The goal for the Lions for this year is to collect in May, 3,000 pairs of glasses to be recycled. The Orcas Island Lions however accepts glasses throughout the year.
Orcas Lions Club Meetings are held every Wednesday at 11:45 am, at the American Legion Hall on Crescent Beach Road. Come see what we are all about!
