Sustainable Orcas Island (SOI) will hold its monthly meeting from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at the Eastsound Fire Hall. The SOI meeting will be preceded by a  meeting from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.  on the County’s Solid Waste program to follow up and develop action items from the recent surveys.

Phil Heikkinen, SOI chair, says that the first half-hour of the SOI meeting may be devoted to the solid waste discussion if it is “still going strong.”

Agenda items suggested for the SOI meeting are:

1.       Update on the Share Orcas project by Jeremiah and Ione.

2.      Planning and seed distribution for cover crops and winter grains to plant this fall.

3.       Broadening the applications and usefulness of the SOI wiki and the Whole Islands Catalog.

4.      GMO beets and related issues.

5.      Plastic coverings for hoophouses.

6.        Neighborhood or hamlet approach to cooperative projects.
