At the August 2009 county-wide CAO meeting to consider Best Available Science, the power at San Juan Center went out, and the meeting was conducted by light from cell phones, computers and lanterns

Meeting to be continued on Tuesday

A Special Meeting of the County Council to review the Best Available Science (BAS) compiled for the Critical Areas Ordinance (CAO) Update, will begin at 8:30  a.m. in the County Legislative Building across the street from the Courthouse on Monday morning.

The meeting is scheduled for all day, with a break for lunch.

Shireene Hale, Planning Coordinator, will facilitate discussion of the following topics:

Chapter 1: Introduction;
Chapter 2: Wetlands;
Chapter 3: Marine Fish and Wildlife Habitat Conservation Areas;
Chapter 4: Upland Fish and Wildlife Habitat Conservation Areas;
Chapter 5: Frequently Flooded Areas;
Chapter 6: Geologically Hazardous Areas;
Chapter 7: Stormwater Management Alternatives;
Chapter 8: Maps;
Chapter 9: Responses to Comments from Scientific Experts and Agencies

Public Comment will be accepted. The Council will hold a conference call with scientists and staff, after which further public comment will be accepted. The meeting will conclude with Council discussion and final direction to County Staff.

On Tuesday, May 17, the Council will again reconvene at 8:30 a.m. to continue the Best Available Science workshop. At 11 a.m. the Council agenda will include:

1) Topics for Quarterly Joint Meeting w/ Town of Friday Harbor – Council
2) Welcome of Washington Secretary of State, Sam Reed
3) Report from the Human Services Advisory Board Chair Catherine Ellis
4) Report from the County Administration on:

  • Annual Update on Personal Health Services – Susan Leff,  Manager
  • Revised Critical Area Ordinance (CAO) Workplan – Shireene Hale, Planning Coordinator
  • Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (LTAC) Increase of 2011 Grant Award for San Juan County Fair – Stan Matthews
