The OISD School Board held a special meeting last week to adopt a “Minimum Educational Program” for 2017-2018 in response to the anticipated revenue decreases from the state. Resolution #2017-05 was created to address the fact, according to OISD, that: “Orcas Island School District does not have the reasonably assured financial resources necessary to maintain its program, staffing and services at the present levels for the 2017-2018 school year; [therefore], it is necessary to make certain reductions in the certificated positions for the upcoming school year.”

It was determined that a 5.98 reduction in FTE staff would be required. However, it was reported that only a 2.28 FTE reduction will actually be necessary due to non-renewing contracts, retirements and unexpected resignations by current staff.

Superintendent Eric Webb said, “We won’t necessarily lose programs. We can modify current roles, and shift staff around to make up for the loss.”

It was also announced that the 6th grade will be moving to the middle school starting in the fall.
