Understanding Risks to San Juan County and the Gulf Islands from Increased Vessel Traffic: Charting a Path Forward The San Juan County Marine Managers’ workshop is being held on March 26th and 27th, 2015. This year’s theme is “Understanding Risks to San Juan County and Gulf Islands from Increased Vessel Traffic: Charting a Path Forward.” The goal for the workshop is to:
- Understand the result of the recent Vessel Traffic Risk Assessment Study
- Understand how the projected traffic increase and changes in type of cargo means to Marine Managers in the San Juan and Gulf Islands
- Identify key strategies and potential actions for the county to address these changes
The two day workshop will consist of presentations, break out brainstorming sessions and hands on activities. Topics to be covered at the workshop include:
- Understanding current risks to San Juan County and the Gulf Islands from existing vessel traffic in surrounding marine waters
- Understanding future risks to San Juan County and the Gulf Islands from projected vessel traffic in surrounding marine waters
- Trans-boundary coordination and response systems compatibility
- An examination of current modeling tools in use for spill risk
- Spill drill/modeling exercise
- Facilitated discussion regarding decision framework
- Spectrum of options available to San Juan and Gulf Island communities – facilitated break out sessions
