— from the San Juan County Fire Marshal —
The recent rain and forecast for more means the fire danger in San Juan County is now officially “Low”. Burn permits are now available.
Residential burn permits allow a single burn pile up to ten feet in diameter. The permit fee is $15. They can be obtained from your local Fire District or online at www.sjcfiremarshal.org. Residential burn permits will be valid from Oct 1 through June 30, subject to changing weather conditions.
Open burning is not allowed within urban growth areas, which includes the Town of Friday Harbor, Eastsound and Lopez Village.

During the open burning season, permits are required for residential and commercial-size burn piles. Residential burns may be up to ten-feet in diameter.
Permits cost $15. During the burning season permits can be purchased here or in person from the headquarters fire stations on Orcas, San Juan, Lopez and Shaw Islands.Commercial permits are needed for larger burns. Heavy equipment – such as an excavator – is required to be on scene. Commercial permits cost $225 and are valid for 30 days.
Commercial permits are not available online because a site inspection is required prior to the issuance of a commercial burn permit.

I so appreciate that I can now buy my burn permit online instead of making a trip all the way into the village. The environment appreciates it too.
