Steve Marler, County Fire Marshal

Because of the change in weather, the Governor has modified the outdoor burn ban that was expected to last until Monday, October 15. As of 8:00 AM Saturday morning, recreational fires will again be allowed throughout San Juan County. Recreational fires are essentially “campfires”. They are limited to two feet in width, and must be surrounded by a six foot diameter area that is clear of anything that can burn.

Residential and commercial burn permits will be available as soon as a sufficient amount of rain has fallen to reduce the risk of a permitted burn escaping control. That will probably require about one inch of rain. It is anticipated that our county will met that threshold within a few days.

Until enough rain has fallen to reduce the risk of an uncontrollable fire, residents of all islands are urged to continue to be very cautious about fire, and help everyone to keep our beautiful islands safe.
