The Third Annual Turtleback Open was won in a playoff between two Orcas four-somes, with a visiting French youth on board the challenging team.

The team composed of Chris Dolan, Norm Flint, Jim Schaffer-Bauck  and 16-year-old Timothe Aussud of France, came in from regular play at 59, or 13 under par on the 18-hole scramble.

The winning team, made up of Steven Bailey, Jess Goffeney, Wally Gudgell and Richard Keck, came in with the same score, and the two teams teed off on the 12th hole for the playoff round.

Goffeney’ blasted a “monster drive” as described by teammate Richard Keck, estimated to be about 270 yards, and his teammates were able to best their competitors on the green and win the tournament.

All proceeds from the Tournament go to benefit Roger Weinel and his family.  Roger has been a regular at the course for years, and recently suffered a stroke while golfing.

Aussud, who showed up at the golf course on Saturday morning and teamed up with Dolan, Flint and Schaffer-Bauck won the award for “Closest to the Pin” at 3 feet 9 inches, and also for the Longest Drive, which was estimated to be about 280 yards and “uphill and into the wind.” That drive was also off the 12th hole earlier in the tournament.

In the 2007 Turtleback Open,  Goffeney won the award for longest drive.

A barbecue meal followed the competition. A silent auction was also held at the tournament, and door prizes were awarded to various tournament players.

In closing ceremonies, new owner Kendall Taylor announced that Friday night golf has started with glowstick balls and pins. He expects play to begin between 9 and 10 p.m. through the month of August.
