Lopez Island Farm Tour on Saturday, Oct. 4

— from Shannon Borg, San Juan Visitors Bureau —

This year, Savor the San Juans is featuring two self-guided farm tours: The Orcas Island Farm Tour ($20 at The Kitchen), on Sunday, October 5, from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and the Lopez Island Three Farms Tour ($20 at the first stop) on Saturday, October 4th from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Both tours are self-guided, with maps provided to find the participating farms. There will also be a community pig roast at Jones Family Farm on Lopez on October 5.

On Orcas, start the day at The Kitchen in Eastsound at 10 a.m. for a delicious brunch, and then follow the map and make your way to the four participating farms, including Black Dog Farm for a tour of the barn; a visit to Maple Rock Farm’s fields, a sheep shearing demonstration at West Beach Farm, and a boxed snack at Coffelt Farm, along with a tour of this historic farm and a visit with the sheep and chickens.

On Lopez, start at Midnight’s Farm and Barn Owl Bakery, where you will begin with a taste of fresh baked scones and bread from the onsite wood-fired baking house, then tour Midnight’s Farm’s state-certified composting facility and visit the cows, pigs and ducks. Next, hear about the history of Cousins farm, where in the early 1900s, Willie Cousins buried letters and journal entries in bottles all over the property. At Sunnyfield Farm, visit the hard-working goats at this family–run goat dairy, and taste fresh goat cheese and farm apples, with a lunch of hot soup blending flavors from the three island farms.
