Orcas Island Community Band will once again welcome the beginning of summer on Saturday, June 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Orcas Center. The theme this year is American music from American composers and arrangers…..including Alexander Courage’s Original “Star Trek Theme” on
this the 50th anniversary of Star Trek.

Co-directors Jim Shaffer-Bauck and Karen Key Speck will alternate on the podium, directing the three dozen or so musicians, who range in age from middle-school to their nineties.

Beth Jenson will play a tuba solo, “Sugar Blues.”

This is the 26th year of the Community Band which plays at such events as the Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks, the Lighting of the Christmas Tree in the Village Green, and the return of the Olga Dock. The band rehearses on Monday evenings, and takes a summer hiatus in July and August.

The band welcomes the community to its free concert, and hopes that regular fans will bring someone new to the concert who hasn’t heard the band before.
