Wednesday, April 23, Mount Baker Road

— from Judy Whiting —

Two more houses are scheduled to arrive by barge on the north shore of Orcas on Wednesday, April 23 on the morning tide according to Jeanne Beck, OPAL Community Land Trust’s project manager.

Drivers and others using Mt. Baker Road midday on Wednesday should be aware there could be possible delays while the houses are making their way to separate lots in Eastsound.

“We expect the houses will be going through the airport between noon and 3:00 p.m.,” she adds. “From the airport they will go to Mt. Baker road to the west. One house will turn north on Seaview, the second will go north on Mountain View.”

This is the first time Nickel Bros. will have two crews, two trucks, and two houses on a barge coming with additional houses for OPAL.

OPAL stands for “Of People and Land,” representing a commitment to protecting natural resources while also providing permanently affordable homes for people who are vital to the Orcas Island community. Incorporated in 1989, OPAL now provides homes for over 100 households on Orcas Island, and continues to accept applications from people whose annual household income is at least $18,000 and who are not able to afford a home on the open housing market.
