— by Lin McNulty —
We’ve all seen the wind-loving sculptures alongside Orcas Road at Double Hill Road. And now the world, as well, is wonderfully aware of the magic. With YouTube videos logging nearly 1 million views, it is apparent the globe is abuzz over the 2016 Olympics cauldron, designed by Orcas Island artist Anthony Howe.
The kinetic, wind-powered sculpture depicts the sun, reflecting the light of the flame, and exemplifies global warming, a theme of the Rio opening ceremony. The cauldron represents a desire to reduce fossil fuel and greenhouse emissions. The sculpture is constantly in motion.
Anthony Howe could not be reached for comment. Perhaps he is basking in Rio?

Glorious! We are so proud. Orcas is an island of artists and magic and Anthony Howe embodies the best of us in this beautiful work.
