On Sunday, April 11 at 4:38pm a 911 transfer from Skagit County came into the Sheriff’s Office of a possible plane in the water off the south end of Blakely Island.

The Sheriff’s Office, San Juan Fire, San Juan EMS, Orcas Fire and Rescue along with USCG responded to the area it was reported the plane went down. The M/V Chelan’s 3:20 p.m. departure from Anacortes was also diverted off course for this search and rescue assist.

No injuries were reported. Both occupants were able to get out of the plane and safely made it to shore where they were transported via Airlift to a hospital on the mainland.

The plane sank in about 600 feet of water, a Federal Aviation Administration official said. Officials have not confirmed exactly what caused the plane to crash. The FAA is investigating.

At this time the plane has not been located or recovered.
