— from Cole Sisson for Salish Sea Tour Co —
Salish Sea Tour Co is about to launch a new “experience driven” tour service this May on Orcas Island. The tours feature a behind the scenes peek at life on the island. Two daily tours: Art, History & Local Legends and Fresh Fermented & Flying High have fascinating focuses. One will highlight local artisans and history, the other showcases Orcas Island’s acclaimed food and drink culture.
Tour participants will enjoy experiences unavailable to the everyday tourist, from a lesson in ocean sustainability and oyster shucking at Buck Bay Shellfish; to tasting the fruits and herbs used to produce homemade preserves and lotions; to visiting the farms that provide produce to local restaurants. It’s the only Orcas Island tour company that comes close to offering a grassroots, ground-level introduction to the island community.
“I’m thrilled to open this business on the island where I was raised,” says owner of Salish Sea Tour Co, Cole Sisson. “Having had the opportunity to travel around the world—to experience the culture and hospitality of incredible people—I can’t express how exciting it is to return home and give others a vehicle to see the magic of island life.”
A new Mercedes Benz 12-passenger sprinter van complete with high ceilings and air conditioning provides the perfect conveyance for tours. On board coolers provide storage for the oysters, farm fresh vegetables or growler of local beer you may wish to purchase on your tour.
Your guides will be long-time locals, well versed in the island’s history and community. Friendly and professional, they will bring a high level of hospitality to the day and also answer questions based on years of living in the San Juan Islands.
