UPDATED June 6 to include additional photos from Department of Emergency Management.

Today at approximately 7:30 a.m., Orcas Island Fire and Rescue received a report of a boat on fire in Judd Cove. Response was immediately requested from the United States Coast Guard, San Juan County Sheriff’s Department, and San Juan Fire Department for response on the Sentinel patrol boat. At 9:30 a.m. the vessel sank and is currently resting in a shallow area of Judd Cove.

Orcas Island Fire and Rescue notified the Washington State Department of Ecology. Currently, the incident is being managed by a unified command consisting of the Washington State Department of Ecology, United States Coast Guard, and San Juan County Emergency Management.

The Island Oil Spill Association has responded to the scene. Global Diving and Salvage will be responding to recover any remaining fuel/oil on board. Ecology responders are assessing shoreline impacts. There have not been any current reports of impacted wildlife.

At this time, incident command has been handed over to the responding Federal and State Agencies. Orcas Island Fire and Rescue will continue to provide support to those agencies as requested.
