From Undersheriff Bruce Distler
The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office and Undersheriff Bruce Distler invite the public to an open meeting at the Orcas Senior Center between 4PM and 6PM on Tuesday February 26, 2013.
The meeting will be an open forum focused on island safety. Possible topics for discussion include bicycle safety, pedestrian safety, traffic safety, and gun safety. Your island deputies may be available to meet and greet each of you as their duties allow.
Additional topics for discussion may include:
- Local law enforcement
- Free gun locks
- Gun safety classes
Snacks and refreshments will be provided and all are welcome to bring their concerns, ideas and plans for working with local protection and enforcement officers.
Come when you can; say what’s on your mind! (Ed. note: You may even want to thank the deputies!)
This is the first of monthly meetings (except summer months) sponsored by the Sheriff’s Office. These meetings arise from the work of the “Orcas Response to Newtown” Consensus Group, convened by Fred Klein and co-facilitated by Marta Branch with Klein.

I was stopped yesterday by one of the new officers; and I was thankful. He saw me do a “California” rolling stop at N. Beach and School St., I was “driving tired.” Totally unaware that I had not come to a full stop; I was mortified; that is a dangerous intersection, with children crossing there all the time–and they don’t necessarily look for traffic first. He was very polite, professional, friendly; and today I am a better, more attentive driver, and grateful he jerked me to attention.
Glad to have an opportunity to meet our Orcas deputies. Our community is best served when we know one another and can share our ideas and concerns. Thanks for creating the time to do this.
Two deputies stopped in the Chamber of Commerce office last Saturday… just to chat. Very nice.
We have a great crew here on Orcas
They be great!!!
As my 5 kids grew up our Deputies politely
(but watchfully) kept their cars under the speed limit . . . .
Difficult, at moments in time.
A nice gathering this afternoon… we should do this more often.
Under Sheriff Bruce Distler and the other Deputies from Orcas Island gave a great presentation this afternoon. Thanks to Margie Doyle and the others who set this up. If you couldn’t be there be sure to make the next one. Great community discussion and input. This absolutely makes for a better, safer and more responsible community.
And it was fun!!!
