— from Scott Johansen, Retired San Juan County Deputy —
I am writing this letter to announce my support and endorse Ron Krebs for Sheriff.
For the last 30 years I have worked for the Sheriff’s Office. OnSeptember 1st I hung up my duty belt and decided to spend time withMarie at home and enjoy the life of retirement. Over the last 30 yearsI have seen a lot of people come and go; Sheriff, Undersheriff, andfellow deputies alike. I have been through a lot. However, the last four years have been the most difficult and trying of my entire career. I have watched the morale of the department slowly sink down to levels I have never seen here. For the Sheriff’s Office to operate effectively, everyone must be on the same page. That is very distinctly not the case now. There is no communication between the administration and the deputies. There is no communication between the Sheriff’s Office and
the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and there is no communication between the Sheriff’s Office and you the public. There is a complete and total lack of leadership within the Sheriff’s Office. The disservice being done to this county is great.
We have an opportunity to affect change in the Sheriff’s Office, positive change. Join me in electing Ron Krebs for Sheriff. He has the integrity, the experience, and the vision for a better department and in turn a safer community.
It has been my honor and privilege serving this county and the citizens who live here.

Thank you for your comments and for endorsing Ron Krebs. He definitely has my vote as well.
I could not agree more with Scott Johansen. As the wife of one our long time officers I am witnessing a collective cry for help in making sure that Rob Nou does NOT get re-elected. Rob Nou may be a nice person, however, he is just NOT a good Sheriff.
Not only is there a lack of communication from Rob to his officers, there is also his almost constant physical absence that has brought the morale to its lowest of lows. There is no one leading the department.
As the wife of Sergeant Brennan, who has been serving for the last 26 years, I have seen him take on more and more responsibility trying to cover for the tasks that should be the Sheriff’s and with no extra pay or acknowledgement.
It is only because the deputies, dispatchers and detectives care so deeply about their community that they have remained.
Please talk to these officers, their families, and other personnel (on their off time, of course) about their feeling about the department and who would make the best leader.
Please vote for Ron Krebs
P.S. Happy Retirement Scott J!
Unfortunately, my experience of our Sheriff reflects (from a citizen’s point of view) ex-deputy Johansen’s experience as expressed in his letter.
In 2012, Sheriff Nou came to Waldron to discuss several situations which Waldron people felt the Sheriff’s Department had seriously mishandled.
It seemed to me, and to the other people that I spoke to after the meeting, that Sheriff Nou was pretty short on solutions to some pretty clear problems, even when easy solutions were suggested. He passed the buck for taking action on every difficulty that was brought up, and denied responsibility for anything that had already taken place (or had been neglected). I am not saying this in a general way: there were three specific areas of difficulty that were discussed, and his response was the same to all of them: smile, deflect, smooth & sooth, and blame the problems on his subordinates, on the dispatchers or on the person who called the dispatchers. Rob Nou acted more like a defensive PR person than like a problem solving leader. I was not impressed.
Thank you so much for the candid opinions (which are not always easy to express!). I knew nothing of these feelings until now! Merry
