After 8 years, Joe Gaydos has stepped down as a governor-appointed commissioner on the Northwest Straits Commission.
The Commission, initially authorized by the U.S. Congress, works to improve ecosystem recovery in the inland waters of the Pacific Northwest through seven County-based Marine Resource Committees. Or as Joe puts it, “great people doing important work.”
During his time on the Commission Joe served as chair of the Science and Technical committee and helped lead the development of the Commission’s forage fish program.

Thanks Joe (for serving, not for stepping down)! MJ
Orcas and San Juan County are very fortunate to have Joe as part of this community. With his leadership and his direction of the SeaDoc Society we have a far deeper understanding of the dynamics of the marine ecosystem and aquatic food web of the Salish Sea that surrounds us. He has been an “honest broker” of the marine science that in many ways has become a political football of competing interests on the Northwest Straits Commission and the Puget Sound Partnership. I sincerely appreciate his efforts for the marine environment we all treasure and the participation of he and his family in the Orcas community. Well done Joe.

A couple of people have wondered “what happened” to cause this retirement. There’s no hidden story. Joe Gaydos served out his appointed terms and decided it was the right time to rotate off to give attention to other projects. (Service on the Commission is a large time commitment.) Please call the SeaDoc office if you have questions.

Good science is critical for us to make educated and informed decsions about our unique aquatic environment that makes up a large part of our island culture. Joe’s representation of us on the Northwest Straits Commission was critical to sharing our interest with the Commission. Thanks Joe for all your efforts – past, present and future.
