Island Sinfonia will conclude their concert season with a spring concert at Orcas Center on Sunday, June 5. The concert begins at 3 pm and tickets are available at the Orcas Center box office for $10. There is no charge for students.

Sinfonia’s strong brass section — three French horns, three trumpets, two trombones and a tuba — is featured in the opening Fanfare by Ducas. The program also includes Danse Macabre by Saint-Saens, Symphonette No. 2 by Morton Gould, Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise featuring soprano Ginni Keith, and Handel’s Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra featuring Karen Blinn. The program concludes with a rousing version of John Henry by Aaron Copland. Conductors Jim Shaffer-Bauck and Ned Griffin enjoying taking turns at the podium and playing in the orchestra under each other’s batons.

This concert will also be the farewell concert for Concertmaster Scott Heisinger who is stepping down after playing in the orchestra for more than 10 years. He has led the violin section with grace and humor and has been featured as a soloist in previous concerts. Island Sinfonia is open to musicians of all ages and includes instrumentalists from San Juan, Shaw, Lopez and Orcas islands. Student musicians are warmly welcomed.
