Rick Hughes officially filed to run for San Juan County Council District #2 at around 8:50 am in Friday Harbor on May 16, 2016.
Hughes was first elected to the County Council in November 2012 to represent Orcas District 4 (Orcas West). At that time, the Council was represented by six Council members, 2 on Orcas, 3 on San Juan and 1 on Lopez/Shaw Islands.
Also in November 2012, county voters approved a new formulation of the Council, with one representative each from Lopez, Orcas and San Juan Islands elected from county-wide voting.
In April 2013, county voters again elected Hughes to the Council, to serve along with Bob Jarman of San Juan Island and Jamie Stephens of Lopez Island.
Hughes and his wife Marlace have a young son. His father, Richard Hughes, also lives on the island.

Hooray!!!
As we know from present and past political issues, a candidate can have all kinds of good qualities, but if they aren’t honest and have integrity, one always questions the other qualities. Rick Hughes has both of these qualities and much more and therefore has our vote and support.
As difficult as the transition from 6 to 3 Council Members has been, Rick has proven that his vision and leadership on The Council puts his re-election at the top of the “must do” list
I disagree with Dr. Ron and Maggie Schuler’s attributing the qualities of honesty and integrity to Councilman Rick Hughes. There has been a lot of controversy lately in regards to the Public Records Act and requests ending in lawsuits against our County of which 3 have been settled recently in favor of the citizens bringing suit against the county. Randy Gaylord and Rick Hughes would like us to think that it is all a misunderstanding and there are just too many requests and not enough manpower to fulfill them. https://www.islandssounder.com/news/378667851.html A question we all should be asking is why there are so many requests. From January 29-April 30 there were 207 requests. https://sanjuanco.com/1056/Year-to-Date-Public-Records-Requests The the case Albritton v San Juan County that was settled the best and most complete analysis can be found in Stephen Brandli’s brief which in my opinion he wasn’t harsh enough in criticizing our County Council, Prosecuting Attorney and County Manager. All were dishonest and lacked integrity. You can read his brief here. https://www.brandlilaw.com/albritton/
Time to replace them all.
Thank you Rick for wanting to serve again. You’re the best.
Thanks for standing up. You have my best wishes for a smooth and quiet campaign
Linda
And how many lawsuits due to failed management has the county had to settle under the current council? Too many.
Sorry Rick, time to step aside.
I supported Rick’s opponent in the last election. This year, based on personal observation of his work on behalf of Orcas, I will be supporting him.

I am a member of the “Washington Coalition For Open Government”. I have been told at meetings there, that there is never an open records request to San Juan County that Randy Gaylord likes. In other words…… The legislature passed the Open Records Act so that political decisions are kept in the open. Granted, this costs money but this is money well spent by the taxpayers of which I am one seven times over.
One more thing. Randy is very sharp and does his job well. In this area though it seems he is lacking.
