Magdalena sorts jewelry

Thanks to the contributions of Orcas Islanders, and the busy bees on the Senior Center Advisory Committee, Granny’s Attic will again be open on Saturday, April 16 with rooms full of treasure to choose from.

The sale starts at 10 a.m. and closes at 3 p.m. At 2 p.m. , most merchandise will sell at $5 per bag, with furniture and better items sold at half-price. Shoppers are asked to bring their own bags. The event is a major fundraiser for the operations of the Senior Center, which shares the building off Mount Baker Road with county offices.

This year, the Center’s Advisory committee is led by Jane Heisinger in making the sale a hoppin’ happening (and profitable too).  Committee members, Magdalena Van Hasselt, BJ Arnold, Lisa Reinholdt, Judy Flath, Gael Shipstad, Beth Jurgensen and Millie Vetterlein sort through the donations to price and organize them . All the women have served as Sale Chief in previous years, and they say pricing is the hardest job — “there’s lots of wonderful treasures!”

Among them are baskets, linen, kitchenware, jewelry, toys, (including the Dancing Gopher from “Caddyshack”) vases, cameras, a 12-string guitar, tools (including a hollow chisel mortiser),  sprinklers and steering wheel covers, silk broacade lanterns, a cuckoo clock,  paraffin bath, and a Singer showing machine. Valuables include a Turkish carpet and an occasional table painted with a golfing scene.

More furniture is coming, and visitors to the Center can look at it all week so they can be first in line on Saturday morning, Heisinger says.

The last donation day is next Tuesday from noon to 3 p.m. at the Senior Center. Special arrangements may be made by calling Jane Heisinger at 376-5025.
