Summer sun (remember?) shines on FEAST students, July 2010

The Farm Education and Sustainability (FEAST) summer program begins next week with a documentary about the sustainability of bees in the face of industrialization and continues through the summer, with the support of community farmers, poultry raisers, naturalists, shepherds, energy experts, blacksmiths and harvest preservers.

The FEAST program is dedicated to “Inspiring a sustainable future by reconnecting Island youth to its rich agricultural heritage.” The classes are open to adults as well as teens, who can receive high school academic credit for participation in the program.

Participation in individual or all classes is on a space-available basis. Register in advance as classes will be cancelled due to lack of enrollment. The summer 2011 schedule is:

June 22
Documentary: “Queen of the Sun” Beekeeping and its relationship with industrialization at the Odd Fellows Hall. Refreshments at 6:30 p.m. Showtime at 7 p.m. Program intro and discussion following film.  Minimum Donation:  $10.

June 28
Permaculture Ethics and Principals: Bullocks Permaculture Homestead. Learn the fundamental of permaculture design.  10:00 a.m.-3 p.m. Cost: $25.

July 5
Beekeeping: La Campesina Project: Experience first-hand the amazing social life of bees and the vital roles they play in ecological and farm systems. 12:30-4:30 p.m.  Cost:  $25.

July 7
Sheep and Wool:  Coffelt Farm: Learn about sheep and the wonders of wool. 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. Cost:  $25.

July 11
Pasture Poultry: Coffelt Farm: Learn all about small-scale pasture poultry. 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  Cost: $25.

July 19
Blacksmithing:  Jorgen Harle: Learn to bend and shape metal into functional pieces of art. 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. (teens only) Cost:  $50.

July 20
Blacksmithing:  Jorgen Harle: Learn to bend and shape metal into functional pieces of art. 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. (adults only) Cost:  $50.

July 26- Aug 4: Tues/Thurs

Solar Power and Appropriate Technology: Eric Youngren. Prepare for FUNHOUSE ECO FEST! Learn to design technology with consideration to the environmental, ethical, cultural, social, economical, and political aspects of the community it is intended for.  10 a.m.  – 2 p.m.  Cost:  $25.

August 4

Native and Medicinal Plant Walk: Dr. Ryan Drum. Enjoy the delicacies of Orcas Island from terrestrial to the sea. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Cost:  $25.

August 8/9

Fifth Season: Help Farm to Cafeteria prepare vegetables for the following school year. Cost:  $15.

August 18th

Food Preservation: Rusty Diggs. Introduction to drying, freezing, canning, pickling, and storing your garden abundance: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Cost:  $25.
