from Paul Kamin EWUA
Curious minds ask why?
EWUA produced more water in July 2013 than in any month since 2005. EWUA’s high meter readings for July suggests that people are using more water.
Recent system improvements have allowed EWUA to keep up with this increased demand without any trouble.
However, I’d ask that your August water use be a conscious decision. It is our responsibility to use our limited water resources as efficiently as possible.
The lower we can keep our peak month production, the further we can stretch our current capacity. This delays future rate hikes to fund capacity expansion.

A dry summer is probably one of the reasons for the increased use.
How about investing in a few rain catchment tanks? Easy, cost effective, and your gardens will be happy you have it.
This is probably the impact of so many tourists this summer, a good sign for Orcas. Think how many additional toilet flushes that means!
this is very interesting, and I would call this polite request for a tad more “consciousness” around our water use tepid, clueless and irresponsible…to say the least. We need leadership and a strong voice concerning WATER CONSERVATION.NOW
I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone on Orcas who has accomplished more to protect the quality and availability of our water here than Paul Kamin. Characterizing his note here as “clueless and irresponsible” seems a mistake.
As more commercial businesses in town have more gardens in “islands” of landscaping where maturing trees are (thus it’s like watering a black hole and nothing will grow there), and the apparent problem of theft of containers, container plants, etc. in town, we are going to have to come up with some creative ways to conserve water if we want town to look decent. It’s a difficult and complex situation. I hope EPRC, Public Works, and Council is up to the task of addressing this. If we want to “sell the dream” of “paradise” by having a pretty town with pretty gardens, then these issues have to be addressed.
I would like to see people get educated about how much water waste is generated from trying to keep large lawns green, and from use of overhead and popup sprinklers. drip and hand watering are still the best ways to water.
and yes to Margot Shaw’s suggestion; we need rain catchment tanks!
