What Is Proposition 1?
Proposition 1 would replace the 2009 property tax “levy lid lift,” scheduled to expire next year, with a similar measure expiring in 2020.It will produce approximately the same amount of revenue as authorized by the expiring measure, and it adjusts fund allocations for the programs which benefit from this portion of the property tax. The amount authorized by this proposition amounts to approximately 2% of the county’s general fund property tax revenue.

Proposition Background
In 2009 San Juan County’s voters approved a term-limited levy lid lift to increase property taxes. At that time the county faced increasing costs while revenue was actually decreasing.

In response, the county made emergency budget cuts, operating hours were reduced and all non -mandated county services faced severe cuts or even elimination. The voter-approved 2009 lid-lift earmarked all revenue it raised for specific programs and services that were in jeopardy. [Click HERE to see flyer listing all cuts.]

Despite recent improvements in the local economy, these programs would again be in jeopardy without this property tax revenue.
