OFFICIAL NOTICE OF
San Juan County Canvassing Board Meetings
San Juan County has been directed by the Office of the Secretary of State to recount Orcas East Precinct votes in the race for Governor of Washington State. This direction comes following a request for a recount from a political party representative.
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, pursuant to RCW 42.30, that the San Juan County Canvassing Board or its duly appointed delegates will convene at 8:30 am on December 7, 2020, for the purpose of setting the date and time of a manual recount of the votes cast during the 2020 November 3, General Election for the office of Governor in San Juan County precinct Orcas East. This meeting will convene in the San Juan County Elections Office at 55 Second St, Suite A, Friday Harbor, WA.
The Canvass Board will again convene at 3:00 pm on December 10, 2020, in the San Juan County Elections Office, to review and sign the certification documents for the recount.

[EDITOR’S NOTE: The San Juan County Elections Office has no additional information on why this recount has been requested, who requested it, nor why it is only one precinct on Orcas.]
The vote count from the Orcas East Precinct for Governor:
Governor | Jay Inslee | Orcas East | 711 | |
Governor | Loren Culp | Orcas East | 199 |
[5p.m. update: The recount was requested by Cindy Carter, San Juan County Republicans. Attempts to contact Carter have not been successful.]

The reason as we all know is that the President has stated the election was stolen, and if he can flip the vote on Orcas to “red” as it certainly must have been, than he can stay in office. Now doesn’t that make everyone there feel important? And doesn’t it make you feel more like a community of people who can trust your neighbors regardless of political party affiliation to count votes honestly? Very sad to say the least…
What in God’s name is the purpose of this recount. Orcas is hugely democratic, as is the county and the state. I am sure that there is some reason for this request, but it is beyond me, certainly.
It’s hard to believe that a recount would even be considered, let along happen with a margin this big between the two candidates!
This is the Wa. St. governor’s race Neil… not the presidential race.
And Cindy Carter thinks a recount will change the results? This is a huge waste of resources in a time when resources are tight. Cindy- WHY? Maybe reconsider and use your energy to help alleviate the impact of Covid in our community.
I think a recount is perfectly reasonable. After all, our president has told us over and over that there is massive fraud. The Orcas East voted 21.9% for Culp against 78.1% for Inslee. Obviously the Venezuelan government has installed corrupted software into our vote scanners. That’s the only possible way that Inslee could have won.
But seriously, what is with the Republican party?
Cindy, do you seriously think that this is a reasonable action to take? Put down the glass of Koo-lade. Please.
And forcing a recount at a time when Covid-19 is peaking puts the health and possibly lives of the recounters at risk, as they have to do so manually and in contact with other islanders.
I was especially impressed with San Juan County’s transparency of the voting process this year. There were opportunities to inspect and observe the equipment ahead of time, during the count, and they even live-streamed the process for goodness sake.
I am curious what is driving this request to manually recount.
Given the behaviour of Culp’s supporters though, I have some theories.
So, what’s the story, Cindy?
I’d also be curious to know the cost of this recount, and who pays for it.
Michael, I appreciate the clarification that this is for the Governor’s race, not the Presidential race. It would seem the Republicans feel that race must have been fraudulently stolen as well. It would be nice if we all could put Country before party when it comes to loyalty. This action does nothing to heal the divisiveness of our once United States. The Democrats endured the last 4 years and were mature about so doing. It’s time for the R’s to do the same and to support our newly, fairly elected Commander in Chief. They have their chance again in 2 and 4 years!
I could see why the Secretary of State’s office would force a recount in cases where the margin between candidates is narrow — say, 5 percent or less. But Inslee beat Culp in Orcas East by more than 50 percentage points.
To me the question is not so much why a political party representative would request a recount (we’ve seen plenty of delusional behavior around this election). The question is why the state, and therefore the county, must bend to a recount request when it is clearly so unreasonable, and the outcome is so obvious.
Seems demands for recounts have become the replacement for unending and unreasonable FOIA requests. Sad that this is happening here, especially with an active pandemic and the obvious outcome.
There are legal thresholds for mandatory recounts, and then there’s political chicanery. How much is this going to cost? I hope the bill will be sent to Ms. Carter.
