Saturday, May 14 starting at 10 a.m. in the School Culinary Arts Room

On Saturday, May 14, one of the most anticipated student-focused culinary events will occur at the Orcas Island Public School. Several students from our 4th and 6th grade classes will be cooking up their competition recipes to compete in the 2016 Student Chef Competition presented by the Orcas Island Farm to Cafeteria Program.
This year’s theme is One Pot Meal. Recipes had to meet certain criteria to be selected for the competition: incorporate healthy (minimally processed) and fresh ingredients (locally grown/raised or in season), look inviting, taste good, have nutritional value, and be prepared with reasonable effort for potentially up to 300 people in the school cafeteria.
Cooking in the morning will be: Theodore Vaccarella, Fourth Grade preparing “Garden meatball soup”; Lokahi Avenue and Alaina Ahrens, Sixth Grade, making “Tomato soup”; Kashi Campbell, Fourth Grade, cooking up “Lasagna soup”; Tayla Malo and Alecia Talbot, Sixth Grade, serving up a “Saucy white chili”; and Makena and Shay Silva, Sixth and Fourth Grade, making “Silva’s Scrumptious Ravioli’s.”
Awards will be presented around noon for all contestants. All participants will receive a small gift. The Grand Prize Overall winner will receive a Pasta Making Class with Chef Angela Emery of Catkin Café!
Judging this year will be Kyle Freeman, Learner Limbach, Madden Surbaugh, Arla Sutton and Aiden McAregor. Our very own Chef Zach Holley will be the official Student Chef Coach, and the Master of Ceremonies will be Lance Evans!
We wish to thank our wonderful community sponsors for helping make this event possible: Catkin Café, Mijitas, Roses Bakery & Café, Island Market, Orcas Village Store, Orcas Landing Hotel, Doe Bay Café and Girl Meets Dirt.
Everyone is welcome to attend and cheer on our stellar student chefs! Event begins at 10 a.m. in the new culinary arts room located behind the cafeteria. Admission is free.
