Rumor has it there is a new chef at the Catkin Cafe in the Artworks building in Olga, and I’m here to quell the rumors…it’s true! Angela Emery has joined forces with café owner Cheryl Helm to create a new “stir” in the kitchen.

Angela arrived on Orcas about seven years ago from Seattle, where she worked at Flying Fish, Dandelion and Stumbling Goat Bistro, to hone her culinary arts at some of our local bests such as Inn at Ship Bay where she cooked and eventually took charge of the pastry department, and most recently Rose’s Bakery as their pastry chef. Angela loved the Island and also fell in love with a local, Brad Siep, whom she married this past July. Rumor also has it that she’s here to stay.

She and Cheryl had discussed the possibility of partnering up when Cheryl first opened the Catkin a year ago, but the timing just wasn’t right. “This time it’s perfect!” they both chime, “and we’re going to make some wonderful changes to the menu that we feel locals and visitors alike will find both comforting and welcoming.”

“We like to call it a balance between approachable and creative,” they agree, leaving lots to like for the residents of Orcas such as great pies and breakfasts, and a kid-friendly menu, too; and still have some dishes that will wow summer visitors with an artisanal flair. Angela and Cheryl share the love of fresh, local food and a warm, welcoming atmosphere and they believe you will love the change.

The Catkin Cafe with new chef Angela Emery on board will reopen for the coming season on Friday, February 12th during the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. In addition, they will be offering a very special dinner on Valentine’s Day, February 14th, from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Reservations recommended! 376-3242. CatkinValentineMenu.
