CLOUDS OVER SKAGIT VALLEY
by Ingrid Karnikis
Across the high bridge
where Swinomish waters wind
flat through flooded fields
and April clouds heap high
above the broad valley’s
square-cut farmland..
Where tulips and daffodils explode
from rich earth,
their reckless colors leaping
from straight lines.
A wind blows cold as March
and clouds cast darkness over all.
The same breeze scatters them,
April returns
as sunlight pierces hidden places
and fruit trees shake their blossoms
to the earth.

Ingrid… wonderful descriptive poem celebrating our early spring magic. So pleased to see you on line!
O, Ingrid, I like all the alliterations in particular! Congratulations!
I loved this rendition of the Skagit farmland we know and love so well.
Very nice, Ingrid!
I’m looking at the daffodils blooming in the field and reading your poem. Thank you.
Also a very happy double 7 to you.
Love, jan
I like the almost-fierceness in this poem; exactly how early spring is – full of surprises, both tender and violent – Nature in all its forcefulness and beauty, winds blowing freshness in, sun, hail, rain, and wanton reckless color, scent. You captured it all perfectly.
