Saturday, June 24, 12 – 3 p.m., San Juan Island Grange

— from Cailin Mackenzie for Northwest Natural Resource Group —

Renewable energy from woody biomass can be an empowering strategy for forest owners in the San Juans to reduce woody biomass, improve forest health, and generate income. Northwest Natural Resource Group is offering a workshop exploring the options for powering our houses, schools, and communities with woody biomass in Friday Harbor on Saturday, Jun. 24, 2017.

Woody biomass in densely stocked San Juan forests presents an opportunity to support local energy needs. This workshop will discuss community-based energy projects from throughout the Pacific Northwest. Learn about the cost-effective methods for converting biomass into energy to heat and power our houses, businesses, and communities.

Our speakers will cover everything from current energy markets to comparisons of conventional and biomass fuel.

Topics this class will cover include:

  • Energy uses for woody biomass
  • Comparing woody biomass to conventional fuels
  • Different forms of woody biomass: firewood to pellets to chips
  • Community cooperative business models for woody biomass energy
  • Heating public facilities with woody biomass
  • Emissions and clean air concerns
  • Sustainable supply of woody biomass in the San Juans
  • Current energy market

Speakers:

  • Andrew Haden | Wisewood Energy
