OIEF Board members (l to r) Terri Gilleland, Barbara Skotte, Michelle Reed, Janet Brownell, Susan Stoltz and Kim Freeman contemplate one of the egg-ceptional eggs artists are using for their creations.

When the board members of the Orcas Island Education Foundation (OIEF) were pondering what shape to use for local artists to turn into masterpieces this year for the Eighth Annual Food for Thought Benefit, the egg was a natural…especially when they had changed the date from a week before Turkey Day in November to May 19, the middle of Spring when “rebirth” is evident and not far from Easter.

Island artists and several public school classrooms quickly picked up their choice of the two different egg shapes OIEF provided – one of solid wood, the other of maché which opened to a hollow inside.  If their creations are as clever, beautiful, unusual and creative as the box and fish shapes they transformed for the past two Food for Thought Benefits, those who come to the Benefit on May 19 at the Discovery House in Rosario will have trouble deciding which one they want to grace their home as each will go home with the highest bidder.   Eggs will be in various businesses on the Island for all to see as of May 9.

And art of another kind, culinary, will be offered up when winners of the 2011 Student Chef Competition will be part of the “moveable feast” provided for the guests along with scrumptious tapas-size morsels from local favorite chefs: Geddes Martin of Ship Bay, Christina of Red Rabbit Farm..  And dessert by none other than Bobby and Bev of Café Olga.

Mark your calendar for Thursday, May 19 at 6 p.m. to attend the Eighth Annual OIEF Food for Thought Dinner and Auction fundraiser benefiting our public schools.   Tickets are $65 per person and will be on sale May 1 at the Elementary School office, Darvill’s and the Chamber Office.  Free childcare will be provided.  You will have a very egg-citing time!
