Keep our research vessels running!

Help us fill the tank of our Emergency Vessel Repair Fund! The Whale Museum’s programs Soundwatch and San Juan County Marine Mammal Stranding Network (SJCMMSN) rely on vessels. The museum regularly applies for grant funding, but during the busy season, things break. Without functional vessels, Soundwatch is tied at the dock, unable to educate recreational boaters, and SJCMMSN cannot respond to all marine mammals in need.

The Whale Museum is raising money for this emergency fund as part of the San Juan Island Community Foundation (SJICF)’s 2023 County Fair Giving Campaign. Through this program, the first $1,000 in donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Community Foundation. The goal is to raise $10,000 for the Emergency Vessel Repair Fund.

To be eligible for matching funds, donations to the The Whale Museum must be made during the four days of the 2023 County Fair – Aug. 16–19. Donors can contribute in person at the SJICF fair booth, online at www.sjicf.org/fair, by phone to SJICF at 360-378-1001, or by mailing a check payable to SJICF (dated between Aug. 16–19) with The Whale Museum in the memo line to P.O. Box 1352, Friday Harbor, WA 98250. The Community Foundation will grant the raised funds to
The Whale Museum following the County Fair.

The Whale Museum is located in Friday Harbor at 62 First St. N. Founded in 1976, The Whale Museum’s mission is to promote stewardship of whales and the Salish Sea ecosystem through education and research. In addition to providing exhibits, the Museum also provides programs including the Marine Naturalist Training, Orca Adoption Program, SeaSound Acoustics Program, Soundwatch, San Juan County Marine Mammal Stranding Network, and the Whale Hotline.
