Mon – Tue, Thu – Fri, May 2-3, 5-6, 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Olga Community Club
— from Caroline Buchanan —
If you have always wanted to learn to paint in watercolor the first week in May is the time to do it. Caroline Buchanan will be teaching basic watercolor May 2, 3, 5, 6 (Monday – Friday, excluding Wednesday).
In the class you will focus on the processes unique to learning to paint in watercolor. These include:
- working wet-on-wet for out-of-focus and background color
- wet-blending – how to use the water to model shapes
- glazing – to achieve luminosity
- brush handling – the all-important manipulation of the brush
- negative painting – the secret to bringing light shapes away from the background.
Understanding these processes is essential to creating fluid, glowing watercolors – instead of just “coloring” with your paints as you did in grade school. In addition you will work your way through the steps of putting it all together to see how the processes work together. After that, you need to practice and have fun discovering what water, paper and paint can do together.
The class will be held at the Olga Community Club from 9:30 – 3:30; the group limited to 10 members, for lots of individual attention.
See Buchanan’s website for discussion of equipment and further details of the class. All supplies are available at Office Cupboard. Any questions, call Caroline at 376 – 5509 or email at watercolors@rockisland.com.
