June 15 thru 25
San Juan County has awarded a contract to Orcas Excavators to perform some Road repair work on North Beach Rd in two areas and also at the Orcas Senior Center;
1) In the Village Green Park area from A Street south approximately 200 ft.
2) North of Main street, on East side, approximately 200 ft.
3) Internal to the Senior center along Henry Rd and nearby parking
Work will begin on North Beach and then proceed to the Senior Center. Work will entail removal of deteriorated pavement in the parking areas, then will be followed with the placement of new asphalt pavement.
Temporary traffic control will be setup and maintained throughout the duration of construction. Parking areas along North Beach Rd will be coned off from use during the construction. Excavation, preparation and paving will be coordinated to minimize public disturbance. The work begins the week of June 15 and will be complete no later than June 25. For information contact San Juan County Public Works at 360-370-0500.

Might we hear some assurance from SJ County that North Beach Road will be fully available this Saturday (6/20) for the Solstice Parade?
Go for it, Bruce and Lee
I am also concerned about the Solstice parade on Saturday…It is one of the biggest draws for tourism in the springtime…not to mention all of the people of Orcas that look forward to it all year….I am hoping that the road works will not be an issue….A lot of preparation goes Into this parade….thank you for your consideration in advance….
It is interesting to note that this article on Orcas issues was not available until Wednesday, at least two days after the project began. On Monday morning, the guys at Teezer’s for coffee were asking what is going on.
A phone call to Bruce Wiscomb determined the nature of the project and his mention of the deadline.
The question is not so much that the project was proceeding though it is easy to question the timing given the Solstice Parade and the coming July 4th week festivities. Rather it is WHY no one in Eastsound, and specifically the merchants who lost parking for a week, had any clue as to the pending project.
Is there some reason that County officials and most specifically the Commissioner who represents us cannot communicate with the neighbors in the community? I have been repeatedly disappointed that the citizens of Eastsound and Orcas seem to be out of the loop.
just a quick note, Ed, this article was posted on Tuesday morning before noon, right when we got it.
The point, Margy, is that the information provided to the public was after the fact. I knew by 9am Monday what the project was about by calling Bruce.
The County didn’t choose to inform the businesses and community that were to be affected by it !!!!!
I’m always glad that Margie has an ear to the ground for things like this. Her notices are helpful, even if local agencies don’t give her advance notice and she’s stuck along with the rest of us behind some big truck. And this is, after all, the era of community journalism, so that if you learn of something, let Margie and Orcas Issues know. Thank you, Margie, for working as hard as you do to stay on top of breaking news.
