The Orcas Island public school garden is off to a great start this season! It almost wasn’t so. It has been under attack from the evil Bind Weed also known as Morning Glory.
Last spring we discovered morning glory growing in our compost so we had to bag all of our hard earned compost soil and remove it from the garden. We covered the area and started over but did not have enough compost soil to amend our beds this year or to start our new potato sack project.
San Juan Sanitation came to our rescue! They are now selling soil and compost that they bring to the island on their return trips. The soil is fabulous and comes from a reliable organic source. We were gifted up to two yards of soil. The different soil types gave the students a great opportunity to learn hands-on about the variety of soil types and how they shape our garden.
