— from Robert J. Fritzen, Department of Ecology —

On Apr. 5, 2017, the Department of Ecology (Ecology) approved, with changes, the San Juan County (County) Shoreline Master Program (SMP). The SMP includes goals, policies, regulations, shoreline environment designations, and administrative processes and definitions.

During its formal review process, Ecology conducted a public comment period and determined that some changes are recommended for the SMP to be consistent with the Shoreline Management Act (RCW 90.58) and the SMP Guidelines (WAC 173-26).

To review Ecology’s documents related to the San Juan County SMP, please check Ecology’s website at: www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/sea/shorelines/smp/mycomments/SanJuanCounty.html

On Ecology’s Website you will find the following documents:

  • Director of Ecology’s letter, dated April 5, 2017
  • Attachment A: Findings and Conclusions for Proposed SMP
  • Attachment B: Recommended Changes

In order for the San Juan County SMP to go into effect, the County must send Ecology a written notice agreeing to the changes. If the County does not agree with the proposed changes, it may submit an alternative proposal for Ecology review. The effective date of the SMP will be 14 days after the date of Ecology’s final action.
