The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office is asking you’re your help in investigating an explosion that happened in the Crescent Beach area of Eastsound.
Shortly after 4 a.m. on March 7, 2022 a loud explosion was reported. The explosion was heard all around the Eastsound area.
We are asking that if you have a camera that faces Crescent Beach Rd, Olga Rd, Terrill Beach Road, Mt. Baker Rd, or Orcas Road just before Eastsound, please review your camera footage between 3:30 – 4:30 a.m. for any vehicles or people moving around in that area. This continues to be a string of explosions that have been sporadically heard over the last 8-10 months and we believe they are all related.

How can something soo pronounced.. that’s been happening for so long and no idea from where?
I am a seismologist at the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network. I heard from a friend about the “boom” you mention and have used seismic instruments to locate it. I can get a good location right at the north end of Orcas Island in Eastsound area and a pretty low elevation (ground??). I can provide the relevant seismograms and details of the location parameters if you like. Out of 10 stations picked it used 9 of them with an RMS of only 0.24 seconds even though I picked these arrivals to only a 1/2 second. The one station thrown out is only 2 sec off. Must have been very low wind last night. The velocity model is just a atmospheric half space (vel.A3 = 0.325 km/sec). The seismograms are clearly from the air-waves (not seismic waves in the ground) and look to be from an explosive source near the surface (possibly in the air even a few thousand feet up but not likely). Location is: time is: 04:14:22 am PST on Mar 7. Location is 48.699 N 122.893 W
So that’s what I heard around 4 am, in View Haven Estates, about a mile fron Crescent Beach.
