Friday, July 26, 9:45 a.m. – 6:45 p.m., English Camp

— from Lena Kassa for Orcas Senior Center —

Join the Orcas Senior Center Nonprofit for a fun trip to English Camp on San Juan Island. On Friday, July 26, re-enactors from throughout the Pacific Northwest and Canada will celebrate peace at the 18th Annual Encampment.

The Encampment commemorates the Pig War, the peaceful joint occupation of San Juan Island by British and American forces from 1859 to 1872.

Although the Orcas Senior Center trip is only on Friday, there is much to experience if you choose to stay overnight on your own. You can enjoy the pageantry of period uniforms in scarlet and blue during the three-day event which includes recreations of mid-19th century Royal Marine Light Infantry and U.S. Army camp life, as well as demonstrations of music; blacksmithing; spinning, weaving, and sewing; carpentry; and the making of barrels and casks. Black powder musket demonstrations and howitzer firings are planned each day!

Everyone is welcome. We will leave the Orcas Senior Center at 9:45 a.m. and return at 6:45 p.m. Orcas Senior Center members pay $10 per person for transportation; guests pay $20 per person. Seats are limited, so sign up early at the front desk, or call 360-376-2677.
